At Middletwon Honda we were thrilled when the all-new 2013 Honda Accord earned the best possible results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Institute, or IIHS for short, is one of the leading automotive safety experts, and has recently made their tests much more stringent with a new small overlap, or narrow offset, crash test. This test is designed to simulate what happens when a car collides with another vehicle or obstacles such as a tree or telephone pole. This is different from the simple frontal crash test where the vehicle is driven into a solid stationary object, like a brick wall.

Honda Leads Industry in Safety

The new Accord received the highest safety rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. In fact, Honda is an industry leader in safety with two Top Safety Pick+ ratings for 2013 and eleven Top Safety Pick rated vehicles including the Civic, Fit, Crosstour, CR-V, CR-Z, Insight, Pilot, Odyssey, and Ridgeline.  All of these models earned the best possible rating of “Good” in all tests including the new, more rigorous roof strength test.

One of the factors that contributed to the new Accord’s improved crash test performance is the Honda Advanced Compatibility Engineering II body. The reinforced structure helps to provide improved protection for passengers during a collision of any sort. The ACE II frame also helps distribute crash energy more evenly, leading to overall damage and minimized injuries.

The ACE II body structure accomplished stellar ratings in the new, more difficult frontal offset test while not adversely affecting handling or performance. Other standard safety features on the new Accord include Vehicle Stability Assist and traction control, an anti-lock brake system, side curtain airbags, and dual stage multiple-threshold front airbags.

While the Accord is the first vehicle to roll out with the new ACE II body structure, all Honda vehicles currently come with the previous generation ACE body. The technology will gradually be implemented into the whole Honda lineup.
