Honda Looks Toward the Future With Heads Up Display
Do you remember seeing windshield-projected displays in old sci-fi movies? I do too, and for a long time, I wondered why it was so hard for those to actually come into the real world and be featured on the vehicles at Middletown Honda. Some automakers have had heads-up displays, or HUDs, for a while now, but they tend to look like they belong on a 30-year old Atari rather than in a modern auto.
Honda Unveils New Prototype HUD
Does it come as any surprise that Honda is yet again pushing the technology envelope and just recently premiered a HUD that, while still in testing, is putting current options to shame? At Nvidia’s recent technology conference, Honda unveiled their prototype HUD, and it is getting everything right that all the other models are getting wrong.
To start with, one of the biggest problems drivers have had with these displays in the past is their brain simply does not like looking at 2D images imposed on the 3D world, which makes it unappealing and often underused. To get around this, Honda designed the 2D images to appear as though they are being projected onto the buildings.
Another nice advantage is the system is set up to display a top-down view of the vehicle and give you a clear idea of where other vehicles are around you. I know I’ll surely check my blind spots before changing lanes even with a HUD, but that kind of knowledge of the road comes in handy.
Why Do I Want a HUD?
You might be asking yourself what the point of all of this is. Is a HUD just a gadget for the folks who are already tired of syncing their smart phone to their car? Well, possibly, but it’s so much more than that too.
Can you remember the last time you went somewhere new and were squinting at street signs to taking your eyes off the road to look at your navigation system? The HUD puts it all on the windshield for you, letting you focus on the road and making it harder than ever before to get lost or miss your exit. It might be a while before this becomes one of Honda’s many standard technology features on the vehicles at Middletown Honda, but rest assured our Honda dealership in Middletown will be here to let you know when it does.
