Keeping your car in top shape all year round does not have to be a difficult task. Our staff at Middletown Honda has a wealth of knowledge regarding auto maintenance, and we’d like to provide several tips to help you keep your car running well for years to come. Changing your oil and brake pads, being aware of engine fluid levels, and checking the tread on your tires are all great ways to prevent potential problems with your Honda down the road. While you can perform many of these steps yourself, a simple check-up at Middletown Honda’s service department can take care of all these little things for you and save you tons of money in the long run.
Learn to Check Your Tire Tread From Home
Maintaining tires with the proper amount of tread is important all year, but especially during the winter months in places like New York. Measuring the tread on your tires is actually much easier than you think. According to most state laws, tires are legally worn out with they have worn down to 2/32” of remaining tread depth. In order to make this simple for drivers everywhere, all tires sold in the United States are required to have a “wear bar” that runs across their tread pattern from the outside shoulder to the inside shoulder of the car. If the wear bar is not clear on your tire, there is another simple way to measure your tread: place an upside down penny into the grooves of the tire. If part of President Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread, your tire still has more than the required 2/32” of tread depth. Now, look at the other side of the penny. If part of the Lincoln Memorial is covered by the tread, you have at least 6/32” of tread remaining; this means your tire is still in great shape.
