Honda’s Earth Dreams Become Reality

March 8th, 2013 by

2013 Honda Accord SedanAs a first step in their plan to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% for all products sold worldwide by 2020, Honda unveiled two new engines with the 2013 Accord. The first two engines to carry the Earth Dreams Technology branding represent a leap in internal combustion engineering, but they are only the first of a brand new line of high-performance, high-efficiency engines that aim to combine the joy of driving with environmental appreciation and responsibility.

Deserved Praise from Ward’s 10 Best

The first two engines from Honda’s forthcoming Earth Dreams line impressed drivers and critics alike, earning them places on Ward’s 10 Best Engines list for 2013. Editors responded to the 2.4L I4 engine’s ample horsepower, hearty low-end torque, and snappy mid-range acceleration. The 3.5L V6 delivers an unusually high EPA-estimated 34 mpg highway* due to its revised variable cylinder management (VCM), which engages three or all six cylinders to boost fuel efficiency or power, depending on driving conditions.

Let’s Not Forget About the Transmissions

The engines themselves don’t deserve all of the praise though. Improvements in automatic and manual transmissions under the Earth Dreams banner enhance performance and efficiency as well. The CVT incorporates several advancements over the previous 5-speed automatic such as a reinforced belt for wider gearing ratio range, an electric oil pump for an idle stop system with faster response, and the “G-Design Shift” control system for a sporty drive with superior acceleration.

Honda’s Aspirations are Bigger Than Just Dreams

Honda’s Earth Dreams are only just getting started. Along with the 2.4L and 3.5L engines they have released with the 2013 Accord, they plan to release engines in 660cc, 1.3L, 1.5L, 1.8L, and 2.0L classes as well. These high-efficiency internal combustion engines will work together with electric motors in 2- and 3-motor hybrid configurations resulting in superior driving performance and fuel consumption. Plans for an electric SH-AWD system utilizing a 3.5L V6 along with two or three electric motors could result in superior handling, acceleration on par with V8 engines, and fuel efficiency equal or superior to conventional inline four-cylinder engines. Let’s hope Honda’s Earth Dreams are fully realized sooner rather than later.
