Honda Accord Safety TestWith the lightning speed at which media features are evolving in vehicles, it can be difficult to forget about the most important aspect when choosing the right option for your family: safety. Good looks and a high price always don’t equate to a good safety record, which is why it’s necessary to look deeper. Fortunately, vehicle safety has come a long way since the days of Henry Ford, and Honda continues to lead the way.

Honda Top Safety Picks

Honda currently has 10 vehicles that are listed as 2013 Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This includes 2013 Top Safety Pick+ designations for both the 2013 Honda Civic and the Honda Accord. The ‘+’ means the models passed IIHS’ new front overlap test, a type of crash considered more dangerous than other types.

Crash experts say there are three collisions that take place in a crash, and they happen in a neat domino effect. First the vehicle collides with another object, then the passengers collide with the inside of the vehicle, and finally the brain collides with the inside of the skull. Honda has worked hard to reduce the effect of all of these occurrences. Lessing the impact of the initial collision reduces the effect on the occupants, and further softening the impact inside the vehicle reduces the chances brain injury.

Honda Builds Cars With Safety in Mind

It starts with Honda’s ACE Body Structure, or Advance Compatibility Engineering. In the event of a collision, the body crumples to absorb and transfer energy away from the cabin. Despite a strong front on collision, the passenger compartment is able to stay relatively intact, preventing occupants from being trapped. A system of front and side curtain airbags helps to cushion the impact inside of the cabin. Innovative features like active headrests come to meet the back of the head in a collision, helping to prevent damaging whiplash.
