How To Jump Start a Car

jumper cables

Maybe this has happened to you: you’re on your way to something important in Monroe, but you’ve got a dead battery and that throws a wrench into your plans. If you’re sitting in that parking lot and you need info on how to jump start a car, don’t worry! Middletown Honda is here to give you the proper way to jump start a car as well as some great parts specials if you need a new battery.

How to Properly Jump Start a Car

For the proper way to jump start a car, you’ll need to make sure you have the required tools. If you don’t want to call a jump start car service such as AAA, you need only two things to jump start your car battery: jumper cables and another car to provide power. Here’s a quick step by step on how to properly jump start a car:

  1. Turn off both cars after you’ve parked them facing each other. Make sure both parking brakes are engaged.
  2. Open up the two hoods and find the batteries. Sometimes, you’ll need to remove a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals.
  3. Find the positive and negative terminals, checking for cleanliness and a lack of corrosion.
  4. Place the red clamp on the positive post on the dead battery.
  5. Hook the other red clamp to the other battery’s positive terminal.
  6. Place the black clamp on the negative post on the good battery.
  7. Connect the final clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car’s frame.
  8. After you’ve got everything hooked up, start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery, then the one with the dead battery.
  9. After you’ve jumped the dead vehicle, remove the jumper cables in reverse order to how you put them on, then shut off the car that helped the other car jump start.
  10. Keep the engine running on the vehicle you restarted for at least 10 minutes to ensure that your car battery stays running.

If your car won’t jump start, it’s time to take it in for service at Middletown Honda or another Warwick auto shop.
