What is a Coolant Flush?

April 15th, 2013 by

We all know oil changes are important. Without them, you’re car will very quickly run into disrepair, leading to very expensive bills from your mechanic. The same goes for timing belt replacements. But what about coolant flushes? Are they really necessary?

One of the worst things you can do is economize on your recommended vehicle service. Your manufacturer recommends you perform maintenance services like coolant flushes for a reason. Let’s take a look at what your vehicle’s coolant actually does and how ignoring regular flushes can take a toll on your vehicle’s systems.

Keep Your Engine at a Nice Equilibrium

Interestingly enough, coolant is also known as anti-freeze. While this might seem like a misnomer or a paradox, whatever you call the fluid in your radiator has one job: to prevent your engine from overheating. Anti-freeze gets its name from special chemical properties that allow it to remain a fluid even in freezing temperatures. Since your radiator is filled with a mixture of both anti-freeze and water, this property is very important. Conversely, anti-freeze also prevents the liquid in your vehicle’s coolant system from boiling.

Why not simply use pure anti-freeze in your coolant system? It’s tough to beat water when absorbing and transferring heat. Using water has a drawback, though; overtime, it can lead to corrosion in your engine, causing big damage.  Anti-freeze contains anti-corrosive additives that work to prevent this, but overtime, it loses this ability and needs to be replaced. This is where coolant flushes come in. Not only does it fill your system with fresh anti-freeze, but it will also drain out any debris created by electrolysis in the engine.

When was Your Last Coolant Flush?

The easiest way to know if you’re due for special maintenance is to look in your vehicle’s manual. There you’ll find a special service schedule detailing when you need to take care of coolant flushes, oil changes, and other important maintenance procedures.
