Be Prepared to Handle a Car Collision

Our auto dealership in Orange County NY helps many people find the right car for them, and we want to be there to help for every car need, including unplanned accidents. Car accidents and collisions happen all the time and could happen to you. Even if you’re a great driver, you are still at the risk of coming into the contact with bad drivers, which is why we’ve assembled this guide to help you prepare for a car accident.

What to do Right After an Accident

The first thing is to remain calm so that you can make smart decisions. Make sure you always have a cell phone handy when you drive, because you’ll want to call 911 if anyone is injured or to request a police officer to come mediate between you and the other driver. If the cars can be moved, then it may be best to move to the side of the road or a less busy area depending on where you are. If your new Honda car or the other vehicle was severely damaged, then turn on the hazard lights and set up any emergency cones or triangles you may have.

Having a police officer on hand will help with this process, but the general rule is to get as much information as possible from the other driver. Note their contact information (name, address, and phone number), insurance company and policy number, their license number, and license plate. Jot down information about the vehicle such as the VIN, year, make, and model and take pictures with your phone if the quality is good; it might be a good idea to leave a disposable camera in the glove box in case of emergency.

If the owner wasn’t the driver, then make sure to get the driver’s information as well. Should any witness have been there to see the accident, get a written statement from them and find out their contact information. Then write down everything you can remember about the crash itself, which will help the insurance company.

The reason you want to have an officer come out to the scene is to file a police report or else you’ll have to do it within a few days—go to your local department of motor vehicles website for more information.
