Get Your Vehicle Ready for the Upcoming Winter
Tips on How to Prepare Your Car for Winter
Winterizing helps prepare your car for the cold climates that hit Orange County in the last months of the year. Older model cars especially need the kind of service and care you can get from a professional dealer, or you can winterize your car yourself if you have the necessary auto skills.
Check Your Battery
Cold weather hits car batteries hard. This is especially true of older batteries that may not be operating as well. Check their charge as well as the cables of your charging system by hooking them up to a battery charge reader. These will let you know how strong your battery is and if you need a new one.
A good flush of your anti-freeze system should be performed every two years. Put entirely new anti-freeze in to make sure it is as fresh as possible. Also check your heaters, defrosters, and wipers while changing your anti-freeze. Make sure these run properly, and remember to change your wiper blades every six months, especially in cold weather.
Get a Tune-Up
Take your car to a trusted service provider and have it checked. This can help get rid of all sorts of small issues that can contribute to poor performance once the bad weather hits. You may also want to get your tires rotated, changed, and checked for potential leaks while you’re at the shop as well as checking your brakes, interior lights, headlights, and exhaust system.
Change Your Oil
Make sure to change your oil before the winter months set in, as dirty oil is especially problematic in cold weather. You may want to consider “winter weight” oils, which are designed to protect your car against the added wear and tear brought on by the cold. Winter weight oil should last you for the whole season and doesn’t cost much more than normal weight oil.
