Geico AMA SportBike Team Switches to Honda
Although Honda is renowned the world over for their high-quality, easily affordable cars, trucks, minivans, and SUVs, many drivers aren’t aware that they also made a name for themselves with motorcycles. If you did know this bit of Honda history, then it might not surprise you to hear that the Geico AMA Daytona SportBike team will be switching over to Honda bikes for 2013 and 2014.
We’re particularly proud of the switch here at Middletown Honda, especially considering that Dane Westby, second place winner in the 2012 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Championship, will be riding atop the Geico #5 Honda CBR600RR for the 2013 season. Traditional auto races like NASCAR receive a fair bit of attention these days, but we’ve found that here are a surprising number of racing fans unaware of bike races like these and hope that this partnership between Geico and Honda will help get the word out.
Not only is Westby a podium regular, placing ten times this past season including one first place, but he’s a Honda fan. Westby’s drawn to Honda for more than just the high performance bikes, however, stating an excitement to race a Honda that goes all the way back to his childhood and the Honda RS125.
He’s got some big shoes to fill, looking to replace Martin Cardenas, 2012 Daytona champion, as the team’s premier rider.
Team Hammer will be constructing the bikes for the team, with General Manager Keith Perry having a reputation for tinkering with Honda autos as one of the first 100 registered Honda mechanics in the United States.
While it will be a little while before Geico, Team Hammer, and Dane Westby are racing on Honda bikes, you can rest assured that you’ll hear more about it from us here at Middletown Honda.
