Looking for a Safe Small Car? Try the Honda Fit

April 13th, 2013 by

Although we tend to think of SUVs as the vehicles most prone to rolling over on the road—mostly due to a few rollover-prone models in the 80s and 90s—given the right conditions, any vehicle can do it. And in the case of a Honda Fit inAlabama, it can roll over seven times.

Seven Times and Still Fine

We’re not sure if this is a record—it certainly isn’t a record anyone we know would want to hold—but what is particularly remarkable about the incident is the driver suffered no serious injuries. The safety features of his Fit protected him the whole way, though the same can’t be said of the car.

As it stands, it looks like road construction mixed with some heavy rain are to blame for the driver’s loss of control, but Honda engineering takes credit for his ability to walk away from the accident. Of course, he plans to buy another Fit to replace the current one. After all, if you totaled a car that just saved your life, wouldn’t you?

A Look at Fit Safety Features

The 2013 Honda Fit is loaded with modern safety features that are designed to protect driver and passengers during an accident. Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, for instance, was built to help evenly distribute the forces in a crash to make sure that it isn’t passed on to the occupants.

When you add in the Fit’s antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution, you get a new level of control when you have to come to a quick stop. And each Fit has a range of airbags, including side curtain ones along the headliner, that are built to reduce the risk of neck and head injury.

This shouldn’t surprise drivers familiar with Honda’s commitment to safety, however. From the smaller Fit and Civic all the way up to the Odyssey and Ridgeline, Honda’s autos routinely earn some of the highest rankings in safety from organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the NHTSA.
