How Do I Check Tire Tread Depth?

Close Up of Tire

If you’re wondering to yourself, “How do I check tire tread wear?” don’t worry–Middletown Honda if here to help. Grab a ruler or penny you have sitting around, and you can check your tire tread depth at home in Warwick! Follow the steps below and contact us at Middletown Honda if you have questions!

What is the Recommended Tire Tread Depth?

The tread depth of new tires is about 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch (about a third of an inch). Some truck and SUV tires, winter tires, and tires designed for off-roading, may have even deeper tread grooves.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, once your tire tread reaches 2/32 of an inch it’s time to replace them. Proper tire tread depth is essential to safe driving in Monroe, and proper tire care can even extend the life of your tires.

The Penny Test

While a ruler is the most accurate way to check tire tread depth, a penny can work if you are in a pinch. Thanks to its design, the U.S. penny makes it the perfect household tool to measure your tire wear. Check the remaining tread on your tires by following these steps:
  1. Insert a penny with Lincoln’s head face first into the tire tread groove.
  2. Check to see if Lincoln’s head is covered and no longer visible between the grooves.
  3. If Lincoln’s face is visible, that means your tire treads are 2/32 inches deep or less and it’s time to replace them.
  4. Repeat this process in multiple locations on all four tires.

More Ways to Check Tire Health

There are special tools available in Goshen to check your tires, such as a tire tread depth gauge, or tread wear bars that have a visible mark built into the tire which indicates the 2/32 inch mark. While you are checking your tire tread depth, some more things inspect include:

  • Tire pressure
  • Any visible tire damage
  • Tire rot or disintegration
  • Wheel alignment
